Building Work Underway at Mytholmroyd Town Square
Building work has started at Mytholmroyd’s new Town Square. It is being created on the former car park near St Michaels Church Hall on Church Street, along with an Enterprise Hub in the Church Hall building.
Although part of the square will continue to be used for car parking, it will also be used to host special community events such as farmers’ markets, craft fairs and other gatherings.
The old tarmac surface has already been removed and high quality stone flags are being laid in its place. The removal of a privet hedge has opened up views of the River Calder and is being replaced by a wall with railings and new plant beds.
Over the next few months new steps will be created leading into the Square from New Road, and new lights and seating will be installed. Trees will also be planted to give a traditional ‘town square’ feel. A new walkway will allow access to the church along the riverside behind the church hall building.
The creation of a new Square, to form a focal point for Mytholmroyd, has been a long-held priority of Royd Regeneration. Chair of the group, Eric Alston said:
“‘We are delighted with the progress being made on the construction of the square and hub, and look forward to the building works completing in the early spring.
“We are grateful for everyone’s cooperation while building work is taking place.
Councillor Amanda Byrne, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development, said:
“This is a really exciting project for the people of Mytholmroyd. The Council is delighted to be working in partnership with a number of other organisations to turn this long-held vision into a reality.
“Once complete this will be a real community space, creating a new heart at the centre of the town.”
Yorkshire Forward is helping to fund the project. Andy Tordoff said:
“Yorkshire Forward is please to support this project. It is the first shared space project to be delivered in the region through the Renaissance Market Towns Programme and was one of the key projects identified in the Upper Calder Valley Renaissance Master Plan.”
