Calderdale Markets Fit For The Future
Members of the Calderdale MBC’s Regeneration and Development Scrutiny Panel will consider the future programme of improvements for markets in Calderdale when they meet on Wednesday 22 April.
Priorities will include the allocation of a three year funding package of £150,000 which in its first year has already resulted in:
- the refurbishment of Todmorden Market Hall
- the relocation of Elland Market
- improved technology to manage Calderdale’s Markets more effectively.
Councillor Barry Collins, Scrutiny Chair for Regeneration and Development said:
“This report offers Calderdale’s markets service a pathway to the future.
For the first time, we now have a defined operational agenda, with clear priorities for development.”
The meeting will also discuss some of the current schemes that are being explored which include:
- further work to Todmorden Market which will incorporate features such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy and self sufficient heating systems
- restoration of the vacant upper floor areas at Halifax Borough Market
- the relocation of Hebden Bridge Market to Old Lees Yard
- developing occupancy levels at the Piece Hall Market and strengthening the future programme of events
- sites for the relocation of the car boot sale in Halifax which currently takes place in Broad Street car park.
Councillor Collins added:
“Vibrant markets are a crucial part of Calderdale’s Economy and Enterprise strategy for the whole area.
Their success not only helps to support local suppliers and retailers but provides employment opportunities and access to fresh produce.”
Calderdale Council is one of the largest market operators in the country operating 12 venues at sites in Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Elland, Sowerby Bridge, Todmorden and Brighouse.
