The Calderdale Readers’ and Writers’ Festival will be launched next week with a wealth of events for all ages and tastes. The launch is on Thursday, October 1st at Central Library in Halifax, with events at all Calderdale libraries throughout the month.

There will be visits from popular authors including Marina Lewycka, Sophie Hannah and Jill Swallow, writing and poetry workshops for budding authors, children’s storytelling, bookswaps, and much more.

Highlights include a series of Starting to Write workshops with Stephen May, author of the successful ‘Teach Yourself Creative Writing’. Delve into the past with Local History workshops and uncover your family’s dark secrets with the Finding Your Criminal Ancestors workshop.

There will be joint poetry events with the Ted Hughes Autumn Festival, which is also in October. For children, there are storytelling sessions, spooky Halloween tales, baby bounce and rhyme and the Festival of Lights with Annapurna Dance, as well as arts and crafts, and much more.

For more details of these and many more fantastic events, visit www.calderdale.gov.uk and click on ‘libraries’, or contact Anna Turner by email at anna.turner@calderdale.gov.uk

Tickets are available from the venues or any Calderdale library.

Councillor Ian Cooper, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said:

“The Calderdale Readers’ and Writers’ Festival is a celebration of writing talent, poetry, creativity, books and reading, as well as a showcase for our outstanding libraries. We hope there will be something for people across the borough with reading, writing and poetry events for all ages and tastes.”
