Discover The Great Outdoors Around Calderdale
Discover the great outdoors with a packed programme of walks and events all included in Calderdale Council’s brand new Wildside leaflet. The guide is out now, and lists outdoor events in Calderdale’s countryside and parks from April 2009 to March 2010. It’s packed with things to do for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re young or old, want a two-mile stroll or a 10-mile hike, there’s sure to be something to suit your tastes.
Best of all, most of the events are free or have a very small charge, so you can get out and about without breaking the bank.
Highlights include the ever-popular summer holiday family activities, brass band concerts, a new series of events entitled ‘Get to know your countryside’ and the annual Skateboarding Festival in Wellholme Park.
The programme gets underway with an evening in People’s Park learning gardening skills on Wednesday 1st April (meet outside the Information Centre at 6pm). There’s another opportunity to get your hands dirty with a willow planting event on Saturday 4th April, in the play area at Shibden Park, at 2pm.
The first guided walk of the new season is on Thursday 16th April at Ogden Water, when you can learn more about the geology of the area with experts from West Yorkshire Geology Trust. The walk is around three miles on rural paths and starts outside Ogden Water Visitor Centre at 1.30pm.
Councillor Ian Cooper, CMBC Community Services Portfolio Holder said:
“With the credit crunch leading many people to seek cheap activities close to home, the Wildside guide offers a great introduction to the wonderful parks and countryside right on our doorstep in Calderdale.”
Wildside is available from the Piece Hall Visitor Centre, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden Tourist Information Centres or by contacting Julie Swift in Calderdale Countryside Service on 01422 393273, or e-mail your request to julie.swift@calderdale.gov.uk
Photographers and reporters are cordially invited to attend any of the listed events.
