Parking In Hebden Bridge

Free Saturday parking in four Halifax town centre car parks is set to continue. And councillors have also voted to promote free Saturday parking in Station Road car park at Hebden Bridge.

Members of Calderdale Council’s Cabinet agreed to continue the free Saturday parking scheme at Mulcture Hall Road, Victoria Street, Cross Hills and High Street car parks on the edge of Halifax Town Centre. The scheme was introduced just before Christmas and has been popular with town centre shoppers and traders.

They have also voted that the Station Road car park in Hebden Bridge, which is jointly managed by Calderdale Council and Hebden Royd Town Council, be promoted as a free Saturday car park. Members were told that HRTC has already been approached regarding the proposal and supports the initiative.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member, Regeneration and Development, Cllr. Amanda Byrne, says:

“People have been making the most of the free parking in the Halifax car parks – occupancy rates are substantially higher.

“It seems logical that the free parking remains in place – particularly in the current economic climate. It’s beneficial to both shoppers and traders.

“The success of the scheme has prompted Cabinet to decide that it should be extended to Hebden Bridge.”

Hebden Bridge was proposed as an extension of the scheme because currently all off street car parks are charged for, town centre car parks are full, and the car park remote from the town centre is under-used. It’s hoped the move to free Saturday parking will help solve these problems.

The Council’s Parking Strategy Review is ongoing, and similarly inventive proposals may be identified for other parts of the borough as the review progresses.
