Grand Opening For Mytholmroyd Memorial Gardens

Royd Regeneration and Calderdale Council are inviting the people of Mytholmroyd to celebrate the re-opening of the newly refurbished Memorial Gardens on Burnley Road. A grand opening ceremony will take place from 2pm on Saturday 11th September. World War II veteran, Lesley Stewart, will cut the ribbon to mark the completion of the project to re-model the gardens.

Secretary of Royd Regeneration, Jade Smith, said:

“We are planning a fun afternoon of celebration and hope that plenty of local people will come along. There will be a hog roast and live music, and lots of other activities. We plan to mark the occasion by planting 2010 spring flowering bulbs in the new garden, and would be delighted if the people who helped at the community planting day in June could join us again – bring a trowel!”

The re-modelling of the garden is a joint project between Royd Regeneration and Calderdale Council, with funding provided by Big Lottery, NHS Calderdale, Yorkshire Forward, Calderdale Council, Hebden Royd Town Council and the Green Business Network.

A prime aim of the project was to improve pedestrian access to the Health Centre. There is now a direct wheelchair accessible route to the building from Burnley Road, as well as a larger paved area around the memorial statue for Remembrance services and other events. New seats and lighting have been installed, and the flowers and shrubs planted by the community will provide a bold and colourful back drop.

Calderdale Council’s Environmental Projects Officer, Anne Holdsworth, said:

“The new gardens are looking quite delightful, and are a real asset for the community of Mytholmroyd. The Council is pleased to have worked in partnership with local organisations to complete this project, and is extremely grateful to the funding organisations and local volunteers who have contributed to its success, and to Setbray Properties for collaborating on the project.”
