Halloween Fun Around Hebden Bridge October 2009

Outdoor adventures and literary fun; creepy craft days and spooky Halloween tours… there are loads of exciting activities taking place across Calderdale this October half term. From sports activities, to museum and gallery events, and even a Halloween lantern procession!

The past is brought to life at Shibden Hall with a rarely-seen display of historic costumes straight from the 18th and 19th centuries. With everything from court coats to crinolines; the changing fashion trends of the past are on show until 1 November.

For an active day out, Lifestyles venues are hosting a range of exciting events to get your pulse racing, including everything from raft building to archery.

Here are just a few highlights to mark in your calendar:

Sports

XS 09 adventure activity week
North Bridge Leisure Centre and partner venues are running a fantastic new activity programme including raft building, martial arts, mountain biking, archery, team building and Team Sports. Ages eight to 14 years. There’s also XS 09 Kid-zone, for children aged five to seven. Bookings for both week-long and daily places available. Tel 01422 341527.

Spring into Action
A multi-sport activity week for seven to 11-year-olds will be take place at Spring Hall Athletics Track from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October. Activities include athletics, tag rugby, cricket, football and ultimate frisbee. Coaching sessions run from 1pm to 3pm and cost £5 for one session or £20 for the week. Museums and Galleries

Dressing Rooms
Shibden Hall, until Sunday 1 November
Displays of historic costume from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, noon to 5pm. Included in admission price to Shibden Hall. Tel 01422 352246

The Big Draw
Halifax Visitor Centre and Art Gallery, 27 October 1pm to 3pm
It’s all about a book. Come and make Russell Hoban’ s “A Near Thing for Captain Najork” come to life with our craft session creating characters and landscapes surrounding Tom’s adventures with his two-seater jam powered frog. Drop in. Free to families. Tel 01422 368725.

Ghost Walk
Smith Art Gallery, 30 October 5pm to 6.30pm
Get ready for Halloween. Enter the art gallery to meet Mr Grimm, who will lead you through Brighouse with eerie stories from the past. Return to Brighouse Library for refreshments. Adults £3, children £1, family ticket £7 (2 adults and up to 3 children). Tel 01422 288065.

Parks and countryside

Halloween Lantern Procession
Ogden Water, Saturday 31 October, 7pm start.
Accompany the Woodland Wizard for a dark, creepy, walk past the scary inhabitants found around the reservoir! Fancy dress, torches and warm clothing recommended. £1 per person. Strictly no dogs. Occasional loud noises and flashes. Tel 01422 249136.
