Hebden Bridge Council Tax Rise Is Lowest Ever

Hebden Bridge residents will be paying some of the lowest council tax increases in the region. At last night’s Budget Meeting, Calderdale councillors voted to peg council tax rises to 1.78%. It means that, from April nearly half of all households in the borough will find themselves paying less than £15 a year extra for council services.

Calderdale Council’s Leader, Cllr. Stephen Baines, says the 1.78% increase is the lowest ever in Calderdale.

“Once again, we have fought to keep council tax increases low. We will continue to ensure that every penny of council tax-payers hard-earned money counts towards maintaining front line services.

More than 40% of all households in Calderdale are rated in Band A for Council Tax valuation purposes. A couple living in a Band A property and not qualifying for any rebate will pay £826.20 per year.

The figures relate to Calderdale’ s increase only and do not include the Parish, Police and Fire Authority precepts.

Labour leader councillor Tim Swift also welcomed the Councils’ decision to accept the Labour group amendment to create a ‘Fighting Fund’ of £2m for measures to tackle the impact of the recession and credit crunch on Calderdale. Cllr Swift said, “We believe that in the current economic climate it’s vital that the Council makes it clear that we are going to be standing alongside local people in dealing with the tough times in the months ahead. The budget agreed by the Council is last night is an important first step in achieving that.”
