Host Of Events To Celebrate St George's Day
Calderdale is set to celebrate St George’s Day in style with a host of events. Calderdale Council is celebrating the heritage and history of the patron saint with activities and events for all ages on and around Thursday April 23rd.
There will be a St George’s Festival at the Piece Hall on Saturday April 25th, with family activities including junior jousting, medieval music workshops, tug of war contest and displays by the Pace Egg players. And look out for St George on his horse and the dragon, who will be visiting the Piece Hall during the day!
Hebden Bridge Picture House is running a series of films celebrating English talent and history including The Young Victoria, Slumdog Millionaire and Britain at Bay. Films will also be showing at the Central Library in Halifax on Saturday 25th April, including Disney classic Sword in the Stone and Excalibur. The library will run a display all week on the history of St George, and the St George’s flag will be flying from a number of prominent buildings.
Active Lifestyles Centres will mark the day by giving free access to the gym, swimming pool, fitness class and other individual activities to anyone sporting the St George’s Cross (on an item of clothing, a badge, flag etc). North Bridge Leisure Centre, Halifax Pool, Elland Pool, Sowerby Bridge Pool and The Ridings Sports Centre are all taking part (normal admission policy applies and the offer is not valid with pre-booked sessions).
School children will be designing their own flags and shields and parading them around the athletics track at Spring Hall, as well as taking part in St George and the dragon-themed relay races. The events run from 10am to noon and will be judged by Cllr Ian Cooper, CMBC Community Services portfolio holder. Pupils will also be getting involved in a dragon trail at Manor Heath Park, from 1pm to 3pm.
Councillor Ian Cooper, community services portfolio holder, said:-
“This year Calderdale Council wants to make St George’s Day special. A fantastic programme of events is in store to celebrate St George himself and our culture, heritage and history. From sports to interactive activities, there will be something for all ages with a St George’s theme.”
