Local Businessman Backs Garden Street Plans
Well known and highly regarded local businessman Simon Moyle has spoken out in favour of the proposed £10 million development at Garden Street in Hebden Bridge. In his letter to the Hebden Bridge Times this week he urged “everyone to support the scheme”. The scheme has received criticism from those living adjacent to the site of the development, whose visual amenity may be compromised if the scheme is given the green light by Calderdale MBC Development Control.
Amongst other successful businesses, Mr. Moyle owns the extremely popular Moyle’s Hotel which is located opposite the marina in the centre of Hebden Bridge. Mr. Moyle is of the opinion that the provision of parking for the many visitors to the town is less than adquate, stating that the situation “has become more urgent” and “is a serious matter for all businesses in the town”. Detractors of the scheme claim that if given the go-ahead, it will “will rip the heart and soul out of Hebden Bridge” (link), although the majority of the town are keen to see the development approved.

The mixed-use development scheme proposed includes 160 car parking spaces, a hidden car stacker system (an automatic multi storey car park which reduces the time taken for the driver to park) , 48 residential properties consisting of 24 one and two bedroom apartments and 24 houses with 10 per cent of the development for affordable housing, eight small retail units and eight start enterprise units for small local businesses. The current car park houses 55 spaces and the revised scheme will double it to 110 with a further 50 spaces for the residential properties and contract parking.
