Local Puppet Company Performing At Square Chapel
Hebden Bridge-based visual theatre company, Thingumajig Theatre, who co-produced the fabulously successful Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade earlier this year, will conclude their 2-month national tour of their play, “A November Day” with two performances at the Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, Halifax. Sunday, 30 Nov. at 2:30pm and Monday, 1 Dec. at 10:30am.
“A November Day” was created in association with the Imperial War Museum North to mark the 90th anniversary of the ending of the First World War.
In this play like many war veterans, John Foster has always been reluctant to speak of his experience in France during Great War. This leaves his Grand-daughter with many unanswered questions about John’s mysterious past. As she begins to unpack the dusty boxes in Granddad’s attic, the story unfolds before her and the pieces begin to fall into place.
The play charts the course of John’s story in the fragments that are revealed to the Grand-daughter. We see John and his brother Reggie sign up to join the Bradford Pals, scenes of life in the trenches, letters from the family, and the lead up to the brothers’ final battle. What part does the stray dog play in bringing the sadness that John will carry throughout his long life?
With exquisite puppet characters, a story that is based on the wealth of eye-witness accounts and letters that document these years, and the richness of songs of the time, Thingumajig Theatre creates a haunting and moving tale for young and old alike.
The show is written, constructed and performed by Hebden Bridge artists Andrew Kim and Kathy Bradley, and lasts 50 minutes with no interval. It is aimed at adults and children, but not recommended for anyone under 10 years old, due to the nature of the subject.
