Local Schools Celebrate Green Day 2010

An environmental initiative is being launched in schools across Calderdale throughout June and July. ‘Green Day’ is a nation-wide project aimed at promoting environmental awareness in schools.

In Calderdale, 22 schools are participating, with over 2000 pupils taking part in exciting green related activities.

Green day aims to make schools more sustainable by inspiring pupils and colleagues to learn about climate change. It hopes to encourage people to explore the connections between sustainability and the places we live and learn, incorporating these themes into lessons and school activities.

Some of the activities taking place in Calderdale Schools include:

  • Eco fashion competition
  • Green transportation
  • Walking buses
  • Eco time capsule
  • Car bans
  • Wind turbine building
  • No electricity days

Green Day is led by CABE, (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) the government’s independent advisor on architecture, urban design and public space.

Calderdale Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People, Councillor Olwen Jennings says:

“I am pleased that so many schools are getting involved in this initiative. Green Day is a great way to inspire young people to learn about their environment and make changes to build a sustainable future.”
