Major Roadworks Begin Next Month In Hebden Bridge
Contractors will begin work on a new underground pumping station next month at the marina on New Road, Hebden Bridge. Yorkshire Water has postponed other aspects of the work until the New Year, which is expected to disrupt traffic on New Road, Hope Street and Albert Street, in order to make improvements to the sewage system in the center of the town.
The whole project is expected to take several months to complete, and temporary traffic lights will be required on three busy town center roads. There is also the possibility that Albert Street may be closed entirely whilst properties are connected to the new sewer system.
Local Councillor Nader Fekri (Lib Dem) is quoted in the Evening Courier as saying: “I appreciate the work needs to be done but I don’t understand why it will take up so much space and time. And the amount of disruption we foresee is unnecessary.”
One of the major purposes of the work is to avert the risk of flooding, and a spokesman for Yorkshire Water responded to public concerns by saying: ““We are going to be working as quickly as possible to carry out this work in order to minimise disruption and we anticipate all work being completed by April and apologise in advance for any inconvenience.”
A customer drop-in session has been arranged by Yorkshire Water to allow locals to find out more about the plans. Anyone interested can go along to The Pennine Club in Albert Street between 4.30pm and 7.00pm from today.
