Calderdale Council is to carry out essential maintenance and improvement works at Todmorden Sports Centre. The work will commence on Monday, April 13th and is expected to take until Tuesday, May 5th. The pool will remain closed throughout the duration of the work and reopen on Tuesday 5th May, while other areas: the sports hall, crèche, lifestyles and dance studio will reopen on Monday, April 27th.

The centre cafe will remain open throughout the duration of the work, although opening times may vary.

Calderdale Council’s Sports Head of Sports, Recreation and Streetscene, Brendan Mowforth, apologised in advance for any inconvenience but said the work was essential and would result in improved facilities and services for customers.

“Some of the work we will be carrying out is essential to the safe and successful operation of the pool. At the same time, we will be taking the opportunity to improve the sports hall and other public areas.”

Essential work will involve: replacement of the pool gasket and removable panels on the moveable pool floor; tank cleaning, alteration to spa pool pipework; replacement of filtering equipment in the main pool and relaying and resealing the sports hall floor.

Additional work will include: a new reception desk and carpeting to the reception area; a screen between reception and the pool hall to improve energy efficiency; a new hot air curtain in reception; a new bridge to improve access from the crèche to the sports hall, re-carpeting, locker maintenance and a new pool cover.

Brendan Mowforth said the decision had been made to close over the holiday period because fewer people would be using it at that time.

“Many groups and schools use the leisure centre during term time. We are keen to ensure that disruption to pupils’ swimming lessons and extra curricular sports activities are kept to minimum.”

He said he hoped people would use alternative venues at: Sowerby Bridge, Halifax Pool, North Bridge Leisure Centre, The Ridings Sports Centre or Elland Pool, all of which accept Lifestyles membership cards.

A number of activities will continue during the closure, including junior football coaching on the new state of the art 3G Astroturf outdoor pitch. Saturday football coaching will also continue to run on the outdoor pitch on Sat 18 and 25 April. Pre-booking for all football coaching is essential.
