Take A Walk In Footsteps Of The Suffragettes
Get into the election spirit this Sunday by enjoying the beautiful Calderdale countryside and walking in the footsteps of local suffragettes who fought for women to win the right to vote.
This eight mile circular walk will visit the homes of suffragettes, the clothing factories they worked in, and the Hebden Bridge square where Emmeline Pankhurst addressed a packed ‘Votes for Women’ meeting in January 1907. The walk will be led by suffrage historian Jill Liddington, author of Rebel Girls: Their Fight for The Vote. Jill will take you in the steps of Calderdale’s most celebrated suffragette, fustian clothing machinist, Lavena Saltonstall.
The walk will start at 10.30am on Sunday 25 April and will skirt round the Upper Calder Valley hillsides. Meet on the Manchester platform of Mytholmroyd Railway Station. There will be the chance for a cup of tea in Myltholmroyd when the walk finishes at around 4.30pm.
Booking is recommended –email Julie.swift@calderdale.gov.uk or phone 01422 393273 to reserve a place.
