Wainhouse Tower Opens To The Public For Bank Holiday
Calderdale Council is set to add a high point to the Bank Holiday weekend when it opens Wainhouse Tower to the public. The 253 foot-high tower is one of Calderdale’s most recognisable landmarks and has undergone an extensive programme of repairs. It will be open for the public on at least seven days this year, starting on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th May.
The tower was originally commissioned as a chimney for the local dye works by John Edward Wainhouse in the late 19th Century, and was completed on 9th September 1875. However the structure was never actually used as a working chimney and as such, has been regarded by many as one of Britain’s finest follies. Today, the tower is managed by Calderdale Council.
Councillor Ian Cooper, community services portfolio holder, said:-
“It’s great news that the public will once again be able to enjoy the stunning views from the top of this iconic building. For those brave enough to tackle the 403 steps to the viewing gallery, I’m sure it will be well worth the climb!”
The tower will be open from 10am – 7pm (last ascent at 6.30pm) on the following days in 2009:
- Monday 4th May
- Sunday 31st May
- Monday 1st June
- Sunday 21st June
- Sunday 26th July
- Sunday 30th August
- Sunday 13th September
Admission will be £2 for adults and £1.50 for under 16s, with discounts for Passport to Leisure card holders. For more information about the tower, phone 01422 393254 or visit www.calderdale.gov.uk/leisure
